   CHILDREN’S AUTHOR & POET

I HAVE TO WRITE A POEM TONIGHT

I have to write a poem tonight.

It’s due at dawn, by morning light.

The teacher said, “The poem must rhyme.”

“Get started now, while there’s still time.”

I nearly tumbled from my seat,

my heart skipped more than just one beat.

I’m good at math and science too,

but writing poems, I have no clue.

I’ve no idea quite where to start.

I’m just not good at language art.

I’ve read my share of Mother Goose

but I can’t write like Dr. Seuss.

With little hope and tons of doubt,

I wrote some words, then crossed them out.

What rhymes and doesn’t?  I can’t tell.

This project wasn’t going well.

I worked all day into the night.

I struggled hard but lost the fight.

So from my sleeve I pulled a trick,

when morning came, I stayed home sick.
